Our reading group this semester is ending with a memoir about one’s own story. The readers loved it, and our conversation was about the liveliest we’ve had the whole semester.

This reading group will read 8 unique memoirs. We will talk about memoirs as a literary form. The memoirs we read offer a diverse array of settings, experiences, and forms. We will notice the uses of narration, reflection, the changing shape of memories, and how the authors put their experiences into perspective for themselves and for the readers. Through reading the experiences of others, we hope to not only gain more empathy, but think about our own stories in new ways.

This week’s book proved a little tough to chew for our readers: not everyone was able to finish it. That being said, we were able to talk about some of the merits of this unique memoir.

“The Liars’ Club” – Book 5 of The Art of the Memoirs
For the 5th book, we took a trip to Texas, where author Mary Karr tells us of her crazy childhood with wisdom, humor, and wit. Certainly one of the memoirs we enjoyed the most.
